The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2022 was awarded to Svante Pääbo “for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution”. Svante Pääbo leads the Department of Evolutionary Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig.

Svante Pääbo’s research engendered a completely new scientific discipline; paleogenomics. He discovered the genetic differences that distinguishes all living humans from extinct hominins. The discoveries made by him form the foundation for delving into the distinctive characteristics that make us human.

A compelling summary of the work of Svante Pääbo has been published in a press release from Nobel Prize Committee.
