The development of the visual identity for Imagining Science—a crossover between a design research unit, creative lab and consultancy—was approached as a serendipitous exploration of visual representation and language. Its point of departure was the multifaceted and dialectical relationship between the sciences and the arts.

The design questions the common practice of representing inherently ambiguous, dynamic organisational identities through static and rigid visual forms. Visual identity and branding inevitably carry the burden of making claims through their chosen forms of representation. In science, too, the demonstration of a concept, as well as trust and credibility, are central concerns, supported by text and image.

Science and design share a processual, iterative and evolving nature. Every design remains provisional, since it can always be adapted. Similarly, every scientific finding opens a new avenue for further research. The iterative and narrative qualities of scientific and creative practice led to a design concept based on movement and continuity.
