Interchangeable logotype design by Simon Davies, Rotterdam

From 2014 onwards, Fotomuseum Winterthur, an internationally distinguished museum dedicated to photography, underwent a substantial conceptual repositioning in response to shifting technological, cultural and social conditions surrounding photography and image culture at large. The project addressed photography’s transition from a medium centred on the image to a broader post-photographic field shaped by algorithmic vision, networked circulation, digital exchange and changing forms of public engagement. It also reaffirmed the museum’s commitment to photography as a field of multiple media, while connecting its evolving histories to contemporary technological and cultural developments.

The museum sought to establish a more dynamic programme model and engage audiences beyond established communities of photography specialists and enthusiasts. This included the experimental format Situations, combining physical and virtual forums, extending the exhibition form through an evolving archive and connecting local and global audiences online. Its programme addresses questions surrounding digital culture, surveillance, the climate crisis, gender, migration, diversity, posthuman perspectives and the political and ethical dimensions of image production, while strengthening engagement with younger artists and more diverse audiences. The strategy also emphasised research and digital publishing to further articulate its role as a critical, outward-facing institution within the international field of photography.

Unbound Trajectories contributed to this transformation through strategic work on institutional repositioning, visual identity, online communication and transmedia publishing. It also provided consultancy on staffing, financial planning, third-party funding and patronage. In preparation for the planned renovation, spatial scenarios were reflected to connect the future exhibition environment with the museum’s evolving programme and broader institutional direction.
